Our Big Idea

Primary geography helps children make sense of the world around them. Through studying places, people and environments, using, pupils develop a sense of global identity, understand diverse communities, and recognise their role in sustaining the planet. Key learning usually includes:

1. Understanding Places
  • Learning about the local area and how it compares to other places in the UK and the wider world
  • Exploring different countries, continents, and oceans
  • Finding out what makes places unique—weather, landscapes, buildings, and culture
2. Developing Map Skills
  • Using simple maps, atlases, globes, and digital maps
  • Learning to follow directions and understand symbols
  • Beginning to use grid references, compass points, and keys
3. Physical Geography
  • Studying natural features such as rivers, mountains, coasts, and forests
  • Learning about weather and seasons
  • Understanding natural processes like erosion, the water cycle, and climate
4. Human Geography
  • Exploring how people live, work, and use land
  • Learning about transport, settlements, and how communities grow
  • Understanding how human actions affect the environment
5. Environmental Awareness
  • Thinking about how to care for the planet
  • Learning about sustainability, recycling, and protecting habitats
  • Discussing global issues in an age‑appropriate way

Our Approach

Geography is a fantastic subject, learning about the world in which we live in. It is full of wonderful facts, ideas and concepts that can sometimes be a little bit tricky to remember. At DSA we follow a Long Term Plan (LTP) to ensure that we cover the breadth of vast areas under the geography umbrella, in a fun and engaging way by incorporating songs and practical activities to help embed the information. Each year group will also take part in field trips/ activities that allow them to discover more about the world around us.
