Physical Education
1. What We Learn – Our Big Ideas
At Djanogly Strelley Academy, our PE curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong love of movement, build physical competence, and support the health, wellbeing and confidence of every child.
Our curriculum is built around three core Curriculum Threads:
Physical Competence (developing fundamental movement skills, sport-specific skills and physical literacy)
Healthy Lifestyles (understanding fitness, wellbeing, activity habits and how they relate to life)
Competitive & Cooperative Sport (working as part of a team, showing fairness, resilience and respect for self and others)
2. Our Approach
We understand that every child has different needs, backgrounds and abilities — and our PE provision must reflect this. Through our partnership with Premier Education, we ensure high-quality, inclusive and engaging PE and physical activity opportunities for all pupils. Premier Education’s programmes align with the national curriculum and build in assessment, monitoring and progression.
Lessons are practical, active and immersive. We use a mix of indoor and outdoor settings, specialist coaches and teacher-led sessions. Children will experience a variety of activities and sports, with set schemes of work, knowledge organisers and learning journeys provided via Premier Education. Where appropriate, we also make use of our swim provision (KS2), inter-school competitions and enrichment activity days (e.g., new sports or themed activity sessions) to broaden experience.
We use the Premier Education “CARED” model of assessment which looks at: Competence, Active, Reflective, Engaged and Discipline — recognising that children’s progress is not just about physical skill, but about attitude, understanding and active participation.
3. Curriculum Overview
