What We Learn
At Djanogly Strelley Academy, RE is all about exploring, reflecting and understanding the different faiths and beliefs in the world. Children can learn and experience the various festivals and practices of faiths, as well as being able to reflect on what they see and know themselves. We explore lots of different religions including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism as well as Buddhism. We also discuss those that don’t follow a particular faith and compare traditions with ones we may practice at home without believing in a God/s.
Our Approach
Each RE lesson is carefully thought out by linking to either; knowledge and understanding, critical thinking or personal reflection. This ensures that children can explore each religion with a focus and analysis that further deepens their ability to understand the diverse faiths and cultures that are around us in the world. We make learning fun and engaging by using videos, religious artefacts and music. Children love to take part in the different ways that a festival is celebrated.
Curriculum Overview
We believe that RE should be experienced through the different festivals that are celebrated in religions. So each year group will focus on six different aspects of the religion in an academic year:
Year 1/2: Navratri (Hinduism), Christmas (Christianity), Hanukkah (Judaism), Losar (Buddhism), Jummah (Islam), Anand Karaj (Sikhism)
Year 3/4: Janmashtami (Hinduism), Kathina (Buddhism), Holy Week and Palm Sunday (Christianity), Vaisakhi (Sikhism), Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha (Islam), Shabbat (Judaism)
Year 5: Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr and Zakat (Islam), Passover (Judaism), Holi (Hinduism), Pentecost (Christianity), Guru Arjan Gurpurab (Sikhism), Dharma Day (Buddhism)
Year 6: Rosh Hashana (Judaism), Bandi Chor Diwas (Sikhism), Parinirvana (Buddhism), Lalit-ul-Mirage (Islam), Sunday Prayer (Christianity), Kumbh Mela (Hinduism)
